"Er dichon fod ei chalon wan
Yn delwi dan y dulid,
Ni chwyna, i flino'i hannwyl rai,-
Ei gwên a guddia'i gofid:
Ni pheidia'i chân trwy ddunos faith,
Nes gweled gobaith golau
Yn t'wynnu, megis llygad aur,
Trwy bur amrantau'r bore."
Alun, to use the bardic name of Mold native John Blackwell (1797-1840), was one of the most successful and popular Welsh poets of the first part of the nineteenth century. Although comparatively little of his poetry has survived, he is considered an important link in the development of the Welsh lyrical tradition.
This selection of his poetry contains the vast majority of the poems which can knowingly be attributed to Alun, including the awdlau that won him numerous Eisteddfod chairs in the 1820s, a number of englynion, as well as those poems in the free metres on which his reputaiton rests. With an introduction by renowned academic Robert Rhys.
