“Pan fyddo’r anadl yn byrhau,
A’r poenau mawrion yn trymhau,
A’r enaid dros y genau mud
Yn dianc i’r tragwyddol fyd;

Gad imi syllu ar dy wedd,
Nes byddwyf yn anghofio’r bedd;
A phrawf o’th gariad dyro im’,
Nes byddo marw’n mynd yn ddim.”

Robert ap Gwilym Ddu (Robert Williams, 1766-1850) was the oldest of the famous 'Eifionydd Poets', alongside Eben Fardd. Because he refused to compete in Eisteddfodau, he was not as famous in his own time as some of his contemporaries; but later generations numbered him among the greatest poets of his age in the strict metres, especially the Englyn.

A classic example of a 'Bardd Gwlad', he wrote poems for his friends and about his home - as well as to his own teeth and his walking stick! - but he was also a skilled writer of hymns and a major religious poet.

He was the perfector of the Englyn and one of the century's major poets.
