"Fe ddaw eu tro'n ddiogel - ond pa waeth?
Ni leddfir tinc y chwerthin melys rhydd;
Ni ddelir adain maboed un yn gaeth
Wrth gofio am drueni'r meirwon prudd,
A'u dwylo'n groesion, yn eu gwely gro."
William John Gruffydd was one of the most prominent public figures in the Welsh speaking world during the first half of the twentieth century. He was one of the most influential academics of his age in the field of Welsh literature, editor of the magazine Y Llenor for decades, and was famous as well for his long-standing intellectual and poltiical feud with Saunders Lewis, which came to a climax during the by-election for the University of Wales seat in 1943, which was won by Gruffydd.
It was as a poet, however, that Gruffydd first came to prominence, and that as a young man of just twenty years on the publication of Telynegion, his collaboration with R. Silyn Roberts. He is still considered one of the great poets of the 'Renaissance' in Welsh poetry at the start of the twentieth century, and though many collections of his poetry have been published this is the first to collect the poet's complete poetic works.
